Description
The WoodsKnife Wild Wolf is a compact Finnish puukko knife handcrafted by Harri Merimaa, a third-generation knife maker based in Kauhava, Finland. If you are looking for a working daily carry knife with genuine provenance and real Finnish heritage behind it, the WoodsKnife Wild Wolf NZ is worth your attention.
If the Wild Bear is the heavier presence in the WoodsKnife range, the Wild Wolf is the knife that moves faster in the hand.
At 108mm of blade, it is a compact puukko suited to people who want something they can carry daily, reach for in the field without it feeling cumbersome, and use with precision for tasks that call for a shorter blade. Hunting, camp work, fishing, dressing game, or general outdoor carry. The Wild Wolf fits all of that without excess.
The blade is 80CrV2 Finnish carbon steel, hardened to 59 HRC and left with Harri’s distinctive black forged skin finish. That dark, raw surface is not just aesthetic. It provides natural corrosion resistance and tells you immediately that this blade was not finished by a machine running through a production line. It was finished by a person who knows what a finished blade should feel like.
The handle is curly birch with wenge edging. Like every WoodsKnife puukko, the natural grain of the materials means each one is slightly different. You are not buying a product number. You are buying a specific knife that Harri made.
The puukko has been the everyday carry of Finnish outdoor people for centuries. Not because it is fashionable, but because it works. Simple geometry, reliable steel, a shape that fits the hand and suits the tasks that actually come up in the field. The WoodsKnife Wild Wolf is that knife in a form that travels lightly.
Harri Merimaa continues a family craft that his grandfather L.V. Kuure established in Kauhava in the post-war years. His father Esa worked alongside his grandfather before him. Harri is the third generation to carry that tradition forward, and he considers the grinding and finishing stages central to the work, not incidental to it. That care shows in how these knives feel in the hand and how they hold an edge over time.
Raptor Outfitters brought in a small limited run of WoodsKnife knives to New Zealand after working with Harri for some time. We stock his work because we rate it genuinely, not because it fills a catalogue gap. The Wild Wolf will appeal to people who want a working Finnish puukko knife with real maker provenance behind it, not just a good story attached to a mediocre blade.
